Shotguns: Ten of the best

Ian Coley’s gunshop professionals recommend 10 shotguns ranging from the modest to the magnificent – and here are your first five.

KOFS BLACK DIAMOND

RRP: £599.99
One of the real breakthrough guns of 2018 and, for the price, certainly looks the part, with black action and oil finished woodwork.

The Kofs action is lightweight and reliable, and the price point is ideal for those on a budget or just starting out in the sport. Available in 28” or 30” barrels and complete with multichokes.

ATA NICKEL ADJUSTABLE

RRP: £649

The ATA Nickel Adjustable is another superb-value gun from the ATA stable. With an adjustable stock, it is ideal for those wanting precision gun fit without the price tag.

Matte-finish oiled walnut, matte finish barrels and minimalist nickel-colour action make for an attractive, contemporary-looking gun. Multi choke barrels.

ATA SILVER LINE

RRP: £900

Where do we start with the ATA Silver Line? A very pretty gun, with scroll-engraved action that would be hard to tell apart from some Italian manufacturers; high-grade woodwork and complete with spare multi-chokes. Not only do these guns look the part, they’re also extremely reliable. At under £1,000 these are unbelievably good value.

LINCOLN VOGUE

RRP: £1,095

The Italian-made Lincoln Vogue doesn’t always get the credit it deserves, but it’s ultra-reliable and handles as well as any similarly priced gun. Low recoil and internally chromed bores for an improved lifespan make it a good gun for young shots. The Vogue looks good, with scroll engraving on a black action and gold game bird details. Comes with multi-chokes in an ABS case.

BROWNING B725

RRP: £1,595

The B725 is a fantastic entry-level competition gun. The lower profile action and back-bored Vector Pro barrels produce less recoil and a more refined balance.

The stock dimensions have strayed away from the traditional 525, but not necessarily in a bad way; the new palm swell and Inflex pads are all big advantages in our book.

Another thing not to be overlooked is the crisp mechanical trigger, which is a big improvement on previous Browning models. This gun is ideal if you’re committed to your shooting and want to take the next step.
