Fennes Shooting School first opened its gates in 1983, when clays were shot at a corporate event on the lawn of owner Ned Tabor’s picturesque Georgian house. Since then it’s gone from strength to strength, with Ned building it over the years into the first class facility that it is today.
The ground has 14 stands of Sporting clays, as well as Compak, Skeet and DTL layouts. Clever landscaping and trap towers of different heights up to 120 feet mean there’s a huge variety of targets on offer.
There are already two areas that are under cover, but Ned’s not one to rest on his laurels and is currently building additional shelter for those days when the sun beats down or the rain just never stops.
Everything’s set up to cater to disabled shooters too, with hard pathways to the stands. There’s a shot weight restriction of 28 grams, and shot size is limited to 7.5, 8 or 9.
The Fennes is a ground that likes to give back, so it’s no surprise their biggest events are charity shoots and young shots’ days. It’s also open six days a week from 9am, with lessons by appointment every weekday and on Saturdays until 1pm.
The staff make you feel at ease from the moment you walk in. Whether you’re a beginner or a master, Fennes has the facilities to meet your needs.
Head back after a hard day’s shooting, and things just keep getting better. A vast array of guns, ammunition and clothing is available from the on-site gun shop. Refreshments and snacks are available – including group catering.
With all this on offer, and in such an idyllic setting, there’s no mystery why shooters keep coming back to the Fennes.
LESSONS
Adults – £81 for an hour lesson, £73 member’s rate. Includes 50 clays and 50 cartridges. Extra people £10 each plus clays and cartridges. A joint lesson including clays and cartridges for two can be booked for £117, or £107 for members
Juniors – £60 for a lesson including 50 clays and cartridges
Beginners – £35 will buy you a 30-minute have-a-go lesson for one person including 25 clays and cartridges.
WHO’S WHO?
Ned Tabor is the owner, while 13-times England Sporting and Fitasc shooter Tracey Riddington is the manager, ably aided by Ali Schwind. Kevin Lock and Dan Hoskins look after the ground, and are also instructors, in which capacity they are joined by Alfie Hannah, Brian Malpass, Dave Beach and Sarah Flight.

HOW TO GET THERE
Via Sudbury or Haverhill: Turn right at the signpost for Fennes Fisheries when approaching Braintree to take you onto Church Street.
Via the M11: Exit at junction 8A then merge onto the A120 towards Braintree. When you arrive at the outskirts of Braintree, follow signs for Sudbury A131. This will take around the bypass. Look for Broadfield Nursery on your right, then take the next left onto Church Street, signposted to Fennes Fisheries. Once on Church Street, take the fourth turning on the right onto Fennes Road. You will arrive at the ground after one mile.
Via public transport: Just a short taxi ride away from Braintree station or from London Stansted airport.
