TESTED: The Caesar Guerini Ellipse Evo – a curvaceous beauty

IMG_7886The barrels

The tubes are struck off to a high standard and finished with a deep chemical black. With a conventional bore size of 18.6mm (.732thou) the 32in barrels are fitted with eight extended hand-detachable chokes ranging in constriction from True Cylinder to Full choke. The inveterate choke changer has therefore the opportunity to spend many happy hours at the pattern plate choosing the exact patterns to meet his needs. I am not in any way being facetious in regard to this matter, there is no substitute for knowing the exact pattern your gun is throwing and with the choice of eight constrictions there is the opportunity to explore any questions you may have regarding chokes with the hard facts that a pattern plate can provide.

As for this Guerini’s rib, it is flat and tapered from 10-7mm, with a narrow central channel and neatly machined edges. I don’t know if this was Richard Faulds’ choice but it’s an excellent one for a Sporter: pointable but without being too eye catching.

I have the opportunity to shoot many guns, however, the Guerini Evo provided a particularly pleasurable experience. To begin with, its visual aspect is pleasing and there are equally satisfying tactile elements to the gun. The grip and forend wood are, as I have already mentioned, well proportioned and, together with some excellent chequering, the feel of the gun inspires confidence. The jointing of the barrels to the action is also well done, creating a progressive smoothness in its opening and closure, which is important to the target shooter as anything less can represent a distraction.
