Nicholas Holt of Holt’s Auctioneers, bought a gun that was up for grabs at his own auction: the Browning C3 Bob Braithwaite used to win a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics.
He said: I never buy anything in our auctions but I could not resist this important piece of history. I recently shot with it on a simulated game day and every time I missed I felt obliged to apologise to Bob under my breath. I will use it regularly and take great delight in showing it to people.”
Bob’s widow Kathy said: “I am delighted that this previous shotgun has been bough by Nicholas and I am also glad that he is using it and enjoying it.”
The gun sold for £10,000, and the shotgun that Browning presented to Bob following his win sold for £7,500.
