12-year-old Andrew Hughson wins Scottish UT champs

Harris Gun Club  hosted the Scottish Clay Target Association’s Scottish Universal Trench Championship in August for the first time, and it was won by 12-year-old Andrew Hughson, who claimed the High Gun and Junior Champion titles in addition to finishing first in C-c with 85ex-100.

Unknown-2This score was one target clear of Runner Up and Senior champion Stuart Macleod. B-class was won by DJ Morrison with 82 and Colin Knape topped D-class with 83. Lady champion was Fiona Knape and the Veterans winner was AJ Morrison.

With sunshine and a warm breeze, the weather presented ideal shooting conditions.  The shooters were well fed and watered with the complimentary hospitality provided by Harris Gun Club.

The 25-target first round of the event  ended with Andrew Hughson and DJ Morrison taking joint lead and Colin Knape and Ruairidh MacDonald were just one point behind them. Though DJ maintained first place in the second round, he slipped to fifth place in the third round and finished fourth overall. Andrew dropped to joint second place with Colin in the second and third round to win the titles of Scottish UT Champion 2015, High Gun and Junior Champion.

Andrew took up the sport of clay target shooting at the age of 10 in 2013, the same year that Harris Gun Club relocated from Urgha to Aline Forest. The move was only made possible with the help and assistance of grant funding, sponsorship and the local community and was primarily to reduce the inequalities of Western Isles shooters. Hopefully Andrew will be the first of many Western Isles Juniors to win a Scottish Championship.  Follow the clubs progress on Facebook, and at www.harrisgunclub.co.uk
