Mark Winser puts on a Classic performance

Fresh off the back of a team FITASC win in Konopiště a few weeks ago, Mark Winser put together a great show at the EJ Churchill Shooting Ground in High Wycombe to become the 2013 Clay Shooting Classic champion. The week was widely regarded as the best Classic in its 21-year history, with excellent organisation from Rob Fenwick and the EJ Churchill staff, and a great course set by Ben Husthwaite.

It began as many of the major competitions do, with George Digweed heading out early on the first day of the main event and setting a big score. His 140 set a good standard of shooting that would continue for the rest of the week.

BMP6ZfzCUAMg5WlAs competition leader heading into the first night, George had reason to be confident, but this was short-lived as his score was matched by Ed Solomons the following day. Just as Ed’s score was being totalled up, Mark Winser brought them both down a peg with his 144. This score would not be matched, but Mark had another full day to sit through before claiming as the Classic trophy as his own.

On the Saturday, AA-class shooter Glenn Spalding slid himself alongside George and Ed with another 140, but later this score was topped again – twice. Paul Simpson nudged ahead with 141 and Chris Childerhouse would secure overall Runner Up with a late 142.

Along with the trophy, Mark also took home a Zoli Z Extra Sport and 2,000 Eley Hawk Cartridges. Editor Wes Stanton called it, “a great gun, and a good thing the distributor Edgar Brothers had been making in-roads into the sport with the Zoli brand.” Chris won a Remington 1100, and there were also class prizes, such as a Hatsan Escort Extreme and a Huglu gun. These were dispersed among class winners that included Cheryl Hall, John Bidwell, Mick Parsons, Jack Whitehouse, Bill Tatnall, Barry Lock, Taylor Hedgecock and Jason Allaway. Wes also thanked Promatic for the company’s unstinting support over the years.

The awards listings can be found here – Awards Thurs-Sat.

A complete list of the total results can be found here Thurs-Sat Master Results.

A full report of the event can be found in the forthcoming issue of Clay Shooting magazine.

Mr William Tatnall the winner of C class is clearly a sand bagger .He won C class at the Classic at Southdown by 9 shots. It clearly pays to cheat. We will not be paying £89 to line his pockets again.

      To Reg Smallwood,

According the CPSA averages that are available online, Bill Tatnall shoots an average 66.5 per cent in English Sporting and 76.2 per cent in FITASC Sporting. Both these averages mean that he is a C-class shooter in both categories. He performed well at this year’s Classic, but still only managed to win the event by one target over Conner Gorsuch. He also shot extremely well at the previous Southdown event and won by an incredible nine targets as you previously mentioned.
We like to encourage debate on the Clay Shooting website but believe the accusation of Bill Tatnall being a “sand bagger” to be false on this occasion.

I have to agree that this year this was a better classic. That said yet again the Wednesday shooter have been ignored and don’t seem to be given any time on the web sites reporting on the event, or not enough. As for the £69 price tage, yes less than the main comptition, compare this with the prize fund for the two event which seem to be seperate is quite honestly a joke. The srevice day is a test day if this is the case then the price should be lower, much lower

Hi all, I was a line Ref at the Classic again this year and I believe this was one of ,if not the best Classic so far.
The good weather was obviuosly a great help, but the positive mood of the vast majority of shooters and their comments were very positive. Long may the Classic continue and congrats to E J Churchill for a great event.
no matter how good it is you will always get a few moaners.

Thank you Mick, that’s very kind. The referees played their part – so thank you for your contributions as well.
