Beverley’s Cheddite Challenge

Beverley Shooting Ground hosted the inaugural Cheddite OT Challenge on last month, with a substantial prize fund including a Bettinsoli 20-bore donated by Malmo Guns as the High Gun prize, plus numerous slabs of Cheddite cartridges. A 70-strong turnout did battle with some excellent targets in surprisingly mild conditions, and the OT targets were sharp and stood out beautifully against the wooded background.

Stand out performances over the first 100 included 93 from Bob Kibblewhite. Chris Tate fought back from a surprising 21 on his first line to clean the next 75 and put himself into the lead on 96 at the end of day one, with Welshman Mike Wixey snapping at his heels on 94. Adam Gutteridge joined Bob on 93, with the affable Dave ‘Wolfie’ Walton on 92. Sarah Wixey led the Ladies on 91 and Nadine Sutton put in a personal best to finish on 89. The Veterans saw GD Breen on top with 89.

On day two, Alan Poskitt turned up with a copy of a 1968 Shooting Times and a DVD of shooting coverage dating back to 1972 featuring some young shots with potential named Ian Coley, Kevin Borley, Joe Neville and Jackie Stewart, so there was plenty of entertainment in the clubhouse in between rounds.

Chris and Mike attracted quite an audience as their squad was the last squad to finish. Mike squeezed out 25-straight on the final line to match Chris’s 189ex-200 and force a shoot-off. Over a round with full use of the gun, Mike stayed on his game to shoot another 25-straight and clinch the title ahead of Chris’s 23. Mike’s wife, Sarah Wixey, was also cooking on gas and finished with 183 to make the Ladies gold her own. Nadine Sutton followed up her brilliant first day in steady fashion to take silver on 170, and Rachel Carrie picked up the bronze with a 155. The Juniors was won by Niall Kerfoot.Unknown

Reg Toms took the Standing disabled category in emphatic style with 178, and Andy Womble and Derek Precious won silver and bronze, respectively. In the Sitting category Alec Sperling pulled eight targets ahead of Laugharne Jones.
