A look ahead to the Clay Shooting Classic

With less than a month to go until the Clay Shooting Classic kicks off, we take a closer look at the plans for the course.

The clock is ticking – the Classic kicks off on 28 May, with the Fitasc and Sportrap events concluding on 30 May and the 150-bird Sporting event taking place from 31 May to 2 June.

As the build-up intensifies, we’ve visited Garlands Shooting Ground to walk the planned course with Steve Lovatt and find out more about his plans for the event. Suffice to say, he’s got something truly memorable planned – a set of Classic targets to rival any in previous years.

Steve, who hosted the Classic in 2014 and 2015, is looking forward to taking it to a new location at Garlands, and is opening up entirely new areas of the ground in order to set up stands for the Classic.

“I first shot the Clay Shooting Classic in 1997 down at a place called Stoke Farm in Salisbury,” he said. “It was awesome. One of those events that shooting is all about – fun, challenging with some awesome targets. Things you don’t normally see at your normal 100 Sporting week in, week out. For me, that’s what the Classic is all about. Nice, big, natural targets with no need to worry about CPSA averages. It’s all about fun.”

Who, what, where?

Clay Shooting magazine has teamed up with Steve Lovatt and The Clay Shooting Company to bring you a Classic worthy of the name. It’s at Garlands Shooting Ground from Tuesday 28 May to Sunday 2 June, and
it’s going to be absolutely awesome.

The disciplines will be spread out over the six days, starting with t he 100-bird Fitasc championship from Tuesday to Thursday. The 100-target Sportrap, shot over four layouts, will run from Tuesday to Thursday as well.

Then there’s the big one, the 150-bird Sporting shot over two courses of 75 targets each on the same day. That one runs from Friday to Sunday. The prize-giving for each discipline will be held on the day it concludes – Fitasc and Sportrap on Thursday, Sporting on Sunday.

How do I enter?

You can book on The Clay Shooting Company website, which can be found at theclayshootingcompany.com, by phone or text to the numbers in the box on the right, or by sending us a form in the post. This can be downloaded from the Clay Shooting website – just head to clay-shooting.com and click ‘Enter the Classic’ from the menu.

As we said earlier, if you want to secure a particular squad time you should act sooner rather than later. And don’t forget, payment is due on the day of shooting this year, so you won’t even have to pay a penny at the time of entering. What are you waiting for?
