Peter Wilson’s Olympic Glory

Peter Wilson has won Double Trap gold at London 2012, after a hotly-fought competition at the Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich.

Peter was tied with three other shooters in the first round on 48, but took first place after the second scoring another 48. From then on Peter was in a great position to take a medal, scoring 47 in the third to go through to the final on 143.

With three shots separating Peter from his closest competitors Fehaid Aldeehani and Vasily Mosin, Wilson went into the final as clear favourite. Still, the shooting was tense with the prospect of the first British medal in the event for 12 years, and Peter dropped five birds allowing his competitors to edge closer.

But, Wilson put in a star performance when it really mattered, finishing two points clear of Hakan Dhalby who came back from 137 in the qualifier to take Silver. After dusting his final two targets an emotional Wilson dropped to his knees before saluting the packed-out crowd for their support.

Bronze medal was not yet decided however, with Mosin and Aldeehani tied on 185 to force a shoot-off. In the end, Mosin held out, scoring two over Aldeehani’s one.

Overall the competition was a fantastic display of top-level shooting and will undoubtedly raise the profile of clay shooting for the future.
