The British Schools and Young Shots Championship 2019: Everything you need to know

With the British Schools & Young Shots Championship less than a month away, we can unveil an exclusive prize and membership bundle for the High Gun, as well as guns to be won from Webley and Armsan.

On Saturday 4 May, the 2019 British Schools & Young Shots Championship comes to Atkin Grant & Lang Shooting Ground near Markyate in Hertfordshire.

It’s the highlight of the school shooting year, with teams and individuals from all over the country competing. The event has received a major boost with Webley & Scott and Armsan lending prize sponsorship with their O/U and semi-automatic shotguns, on top of sponsorship from BASC, Seeland, Atkin Grant & Lang and Clay Shooting magazine.

As in previous years, the 2019 championships will consist of three different courses of varying difficulty: Red, Blue and the BASC course – the latter renamed from previous years’ Black course.

The Red and Blue courses will be 50 targets shot over seven stands, and the BASC course for under-14s will be 32 targets shot over four stands. No fewer than ten guns are available to be won across the individual and team categories on all three courses, including Ladies, Cadets and Scouts. Parent & Child and Old Pupils competitions will also be running.

Alfie Tibbles will be returning to defend his crown!

The High Gun will receive an unprecedented prize and membership bundle to help them develop their shooting over the coming year, with a Webley & Scott gun, a year’s BASC membership, a year’s membership at Atkin Grant & Lang, Seeland clothing and a year’s subscription to this magazine.

There are some also some fabulous category prizes, including a massive £500 for the winning under-14 team, donated by BASC. Last year’s British Schools & Young Shots Championships, at Sporting Targets in Bedfordshire, was won by Alfie Tibbles with an unbeatable 48 ex-50 on the Red course, with the previous year’s champion Ronnie Green and Henry Bevan both hot on his heels with 47.

Bloxham School dominated the team events. This year, however, it’s all to play for. Atkin Grant & Lang director Charlie Stewart-Wood said “We are delighted to be able to host such an important competition that has always been a stepping stone for the future champions of our sport.

We have some great plans for all three courses to test and entertain all levels of shooter.” John Bright, CEO of Webley and Armsan’s UK distributor, Highland Outdoors, said: “We’re really pleased to support the British Schools & Young Shots competition and are very impressed by the enthusiasm and skill of these young people. The future of British shooting looks very positive.”

Clay Shooting magazine editor James Marchington, a strong advocate of encouraging young shooters, commented: “I’m delighted to see the shooting trade getting behind this important event, helping to inspire and encourage the clay shooters of tomorrow.

“I’m looking forward to attending, and watching these talented youngsters in action at the lovely Atkin Grant & Lang ground.”
